Americans flock to Canada's immigration Web site
Fri November 05, 2004 01:30 PM ET

By David Ljunggren

OTTAWA (Reuters) - The number of U.S. citizens visiting Canada's main immigration Web site has shot up six-fold as Americans flirt with the idea of abandoning their homeland after President George W. Bush's election win this week.

"When we looked at the first day after the election, November 3, our Web site hit a new high, almost double the previous record high," immigration ministry spokeswoman Maria Iadinardi said on Friday.

On an average day some 20,000 people in the United States log onto the Web site, www.cic.gc.ca -- a figure which rocketed to 115,016 on Wednesday. The number of U.S. visits settled down to 65,803 on Thursday, still well above the norm.

Bush's victory sparked speculation that disconsolate Democrats and others might decide to start a new life in Canada, a land that tilts more to the left than the United States.

Would-be immigrants to Canada can apply to become permanent resident, a process that often takes a year. The other main way to move north on a long-term basis is to find a job, which requires a work permit.

But please spare the sob stories.

Asked whether an applicant would be looked upon more sympathetically if they claimed to be a sad Democrat seeking to escape four more years of Bush, Iadinardi replied: "There would be no weight given to statements of feelings."

Canada is one of the few major nations with an large-scale immigration policy. Ottawa is seeking to attract between 220,000 and 240,000 newcomers next year.

"Let's face it, we have a population of a little over 32 million and we definitely need permanent residents to come to Canada," said Iadinardi. "If we could meet (the 2005) target and go above it, the more the merrier."

But right now it is too early to say whether the increased interest will result in more applications.

"There is no unusual activity occurring at our visa missions (in the United States). Having someone who intends to come to Canada is not the same as someone actually putting in an application," said Iadinardi.

"We'll only find out whether there has been an increase in applications in six months."

The waiting time to become a citizen is shorter for people married to Canadians, which prompted the birth of a satirical Web site called www.marryanamerican.ca.

The idea of increased immigration by unhappy Americans is triggering some amusement in Canada. Commentator Thane Burnett of the Ottawa Sun newspaper wrote a tongue-in-cheek guide to would-be new citizens on Friday.

"As Canadians, you'll have to learn to embrace and use all the products and culture of Americans, while bad-mouthing their way of life," he said.

INQUIRIES from Americans wanting to move to New Zealand have skyrocketed since George W. Bush was re-elected president of the United States.

The Immigration Service website had 10,300 hits from the United States the day after the election, compared with the daily norm of 2500.

Thousands of North Americans have migrated to New Zealand in recent years - attracted by the country's small population, clean, green image of bush-clad mountains, and isolation from world trouble spots - but the number now looks set to soar.

Phones at the Immigration Service offices in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Portland have been ringing constantly since the vote outcome, marketing manager Don Badman told the Dominion Post newspaper today.

There have been up to 300 telephone calls and emails a day compared with six to eight calls a day before the election.

"It's exploded. It really started picking up from 11pm the night of the election," he said.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Americans were also looking to Australia and Canada following the election.

Kivándorolnának Bush elől az amerikaiak

2004. november 6., szombat, 12:22

A gyér népsűrűségen a kanadai kormány laza bevándorlási politikájával próbál enyhíteni.

Gárfi! Ezt megerősítem magyarul is!

A Canadian website is reaching out to help weary liberal Americans, asking Canadians to marry someone from south of the border.

"Open your heart and your home. Marry an American. Legions of Canadians have already pledged to sacrifice their singlehood to save our southern neighbours from four more years of cowboy conservatism,"
jokes the site,
set up by a Toronto humour magazine.

Taking into account the direct debts and unfunded liabilities of all levels of government in Canada, the Canadian national total debt amounts to $3.5 trillion, or about $116,000 for every man, woman and child living in Canada.

Amerikaiak írják egy másik fórumon:

It is pathetic how much of our civil liberties and freedoms are being eroded in the US.
The religious right (IMO wrong) has been spearheading a campaign to cram their beliefs and views down all of our throats by using rules and laws.
Pathetic that the only thing we learn from history is that we don't learn from history.
Prohibition worked SO well in the US during the 1920's. NOT!!
The so called war on drugs is costing US taxpayers billions and billions of dollars and filling up our already overcrowded prisons with many non-violent offenders.
It has worked so well too!!
O well.

Unfortunately, so very true and so very sad.
Now, It has been on the recent news that the airport security people are doing extensive pat downs of some of the women going through security. A female can request a female agent to conduct this search if one is not present. But, this might take up to 1/2 hour to get a female agent to that particular checkpoint as all checkpoints don't always have one available. Wait and miss you plane or let a male conduct the body pat down?
A local female newscaster here in LA just stated this week that she was body patted down by a female but felt violated as she had on a bra with a wire pushup that apparently set off the alarm. The woman agent ran her hand up undeneath her blouse to check out the wire area of her bra. She, as others, complained as these searches were done n plain view of the other waiting passengers to clear security. That they even had to turn and face the waiting passengers while body pat was done. There have been complaints that there has been excessive groping in the genital areas as well.
Apparently these type of searches have been upgraded because of the suspected women that had explosives on their body and blew up the Russian planes. The TSA has attempted to downplay the complaints registerd and an interview was held with a number of outraged women present, and the official said that the numbers of complaints was down to about 15 that recent week. About 15-20 of the ladies present raised their hands and said add us! It appears the public is outraged by these extensive body searches in public and the TSA is trying to downplay them and put a spin out that they are actually not that many complaints.
Here again, people are afraid to complain as they don't want to "wave a red flag" and get on that dreaded computer list!
I am for security, but where do you draw the line?

I was young enough (without the vision to see the future as an "old man" and all that it entails) to fight the system. I'm damn proud I did, but we lost, and "they" know it. The taliban isn't coming, it is here and I don't know that I have the strength or the hope to fight again. It looks like our younger generation doesn't give a damn about anything but $$$$$. A friend of mine went back to college and got his law degree a few yrs back and his comment about the young people going to school with him "they have no morals, no ethics, none". I have had to deal with the "born again christians" for yrs and they are without a doubt the most unethical and immoral people I have ever known. Yes, I am afraid to raise that "red flag", I know what it does to your life, welcome to George Orwell's future.

Have Brit passport just went to canada through (armpit of US) Seattle. My luggage was searched completely. VCD's etc in nice piles. Had animal, cartoon, etc etc from Cambo and Thai. No problem but they look for microsoft stuff! Funny
Biggest problem last 3 trips my luggage damaged after being checked. Handles ripped off, eyelets gone from zippers and big gashes. GOOD heavy duty luggage destroyed each trip. After being checked just transfered to next flight. All luggage must be left unlocked so expect to lose cameras etc and expect to replace luggage after US trip.
Also as a brit I was fingerprinted and photographed. New policy. Homeland security. My advice avoid US like the plague!! IMHO
