Amadeo Modigliani: Csellista és Alice

Film: Modigliani (2004)
Az életrajzi film az 1920-ban 36 évesen, szegényen és betegségben elhunyt itáliai szobrász és festőművész, Amadeo Modigliani utolsó szerelmét és életének utolsó napjait mutatja be. 1919-ben, az első világháború után Párizs a művészek Mekkájának számított, ahol a mozgalmas éjszakai életet élő alkotók veszélyes szenvedélyeiknek adóztak. Az egymással rivalizáló művészek izgalmas életét ismerhetjük meg, valamint a szemünk elé tárul Modigliani Picasso-val folytatott keserű harcának eddig ismeretlen története is. (Remek film!)

Modigliani Elszegényedett livornói zsidó bankárcsalád negyedik gyermeke volt, apja éppen az ő születésének évében ment tönkre. A sok nehézség ellenére Amadeo művelt és vonzó fiatalemberré vált, aki a firenzei és a velencei művészeti akadémián készült a művészi pályájára.

Festményeinek intenzív, tiszta színei a fauve-ok (vadak) színvilágát idézik, szobrainak leegyszerűsített mértani formái pedig a kubizmus hatására utalnak. Művészete az olasz hagyományokban gyökerezett, de sokat merített a néger plasztikából is. Ezt jelzik híres szemgolyó nélküli portréi, a tisztán rajzolt körvonalak és a nyújtott, lágy formák.

Lines of various sorts wander through the paintings and then the larger space, tracing a path that never finds a place to settle. </dd></dl> artist statement


I have been exploring the relationships between threads and drawing, between painting and wall, between 3D and 2D, between tentative traces and bold marks.

1) the lines: thread-like or wire-like, linking one element to another, creating a story, suggesting a journey taken or path to follow
2) the boxes/grids: a way to put structure in constant accumulation (of mistakes, messes, things to get rid of), to categorize, and to create a system where everything is organized. The box can also function as shelter (home), or can be a means of isolation. At times the boxes become windows, offering a view into another world.

The paintings are related to the found objects; using boxes, wire, string, natural objects and other collected rusty bits I attempt to create a context for the paintings, a place where they connect with the space, where they belong.<dl class="profile-datablock"><dt>

Prague School - Portrait of Tycho Brahe

Prague, school of. Bohemian school of painting which flourished in the 2nd half of the 14th c. at the court of the Emperor Charles IV of Prague. He encouraged artists from Germany, France and Italy to work for him and a Realistic style of painting was developed influenced by both the soft style and the work of Ciotto. Chief representatives of the school were Theodoric of Prague and the Masters of Hohenfurth and Wittingau.

Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema

Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema,(8 January 1836 – 25 June 1912) was a Dutch painter.
Born in Dronrijp, the Netherlands, and trained at the Royal Academy of Antwerp , Belgium, he settled in England in 1870 and spent the rest of his life there. A classical-subject painter, he became famous for his depictions of the luxury and decadence of the Roman Empire, with languorous figures set in fabulous marbled interiors or against a backdrop of dazzling blue Mediterranean Sea and sky.
Though admired during his lifetime for his draftsmanship and depictions of Classical Antiquity, his work fell into disrepute after his death, and only since the 1960s has it been reevaluated for its importance within nineteenth-century English art.

John William Godward

John William Godward (9 August 1861 – 13 December 1922) was an English painter from the end of the Pre-Raphaelita/Neo Classicist era. He was a protégé of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema but his style of painting fell out of favour with the arrival of painters like Picasso. He committed suicide at the age of 61 and is said to have written in his suicide note that "the world was not big enough" for him and a Picasso.
His already estranged family, who had disapproved of him becoming an artist, were ashamed of his suicide and burned his papers. No photographs of Godward are known to survive.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1887. When he moved to Italy with one of his models in 1912, his family broke off all contact with him and even cut his image from family pictures. Godward returned to England in 1919, died in 1922 and is buried in Brompton Cemetry, west London.
